Mon 19 November: Optional Hands-on IPv6 Workshop

Presented by Veena Merz, Manager, Cisco Networking Academy, QUT, and Chris Myers, Victorian eResearch Strategic Initiative.

The goal of this workshop is to promote and support the deployment of IPv6, not to specifically advertise or recommend products from any one particular vendor. It is for those desiring to develop their understanding and knowledge of IPv6 and for those keen on learning to deploy IPv6. Background knowledge of networking and Internet concepts, including addressing schemes, routing protocols, access control lists, NATs, and router command line interface (CLI) mode, would be useful.

This workshop will cover the topics of IPv6 Address Representation; IPv6 Address Architecture; IPv6 Packet Format; Internet Control Message Protocol for IPv6 (ICMPv6); Path MTU Discovery (PMTUD) for IPv6, Neighbour Discovery Protocol (NDP); Domain Name System (DNS); Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol for IPv6 (DHCPv6); Introduction to Routing with IPv6 including Static and OSPFv3 Routing; Tunnelling IPv6 Packets; EGP Protocols for IPv6; and IGP Protocols for IPv6.

Participants will have the opportunity to build an IPv6 network using Static routing, BGP and multicast technologies, and have a chance to see how it all works.

Participants will need to bring a laptop with XP or OSX on which they can install software and configure network settings.
