8 June 2011: WORLD IPv6 DAY – "Best School Day Ever!"

On 8 June 2011, Australian websites, organisations and Internet users joined in World IPv6 Day. ISOC-AU helped organise a special event for two school classes, from Wollondilly Anglican College and Waverley College, who were given the challenge to 'break' the IPv6 Internet. Students were able to access the IPv6 Internet courtesy of Studentnet and IPv6Now, even though their schools' current infrastructure only supports IPv4. More...

ISOC-AU spearheaded Australia's contribution in the worldwide collaboration to demonstrate the next version of the internet protocol on World IPv6 Day, 8 June 2011.

The global Internet Society announced that major content and network service providers would join together for an international day of IPv6 testing and measurement on 8 June 2011. Many major sites enabled their websites via IPv6. Among the participants were many favourites: Facebook, Google, Yahoo!, Akamai and Limelight Networks were some of the first to sign up.

To make sure that Australian Internet providers are well positioned, ISOC-AU co-ordinated Australian involvement and awareness of the event. We hoped to motivate organizations across the industry – Internet service providers, hardware makers, operating system vendors and web companies – to prepare their services for IPv6, to ensure a successful transition as IPv4 addresses run out.

Australian Participation

ISOC-AU called upon Australian content and network service providers to participate in World IPv6 Day.

If you'd like to try out IPv6 for yourself see our list of IPv6 Providers with FREE and paid services.

Can You Provide IPv6 Services?

ISOC-AU called on its members and associates to combine to provide assistance to participants for World IPv6 Day, such as proposals to:

  • provide a package of free IPv6 services to participants
(e.g. temporary hosting, carriage services, tunnel brokers), or
  • provide a standard set of IPv6 adoption services to participants for a fee
(e.g. migration and planning consultancy, network or content services, education, training)
