IPv6 History in Australia

The history of IPv6 development in Australia is closely related to series of initiatives spearheaded by the principals of IPv6Now in the earlier years of this century. But linkrot happens, organisations change, domain names are lost, and almost all of those significant events are no longer available on the Internet, except at the Wayback Machine.

Many of these activities took place under the auspices of the original Internet Society of Australia, ISOC-AU, founded in November 1996 as the Australian chapter of the global Internet Society. ISOC-AU was rebranded as Internet Australia in 2015, and all of the two previous decade's records of submissions, conferences and activities — even the original domain name, isoc-au.org.au — were lost.

As a contribution to the IPv6 technical community, and as a prime mover in the development of IPv6 in Australia, IPv6Now has assembled much of that content related to IPv6, and presents it here.

2001

• IPv6 Forum Australia, a chapter of the international IPv6 Forum, is founded by Michael Biber.

2005

• The First Australian IPv6 Summit is held in Canberra, 31 Oct-1 Nov 2005. (All Australian IPv6 Summits were planned and organised by principals of IPv6Now.)

2006

• Second Australian IPv6 Summit, Canberra, 4-6 December 2006.
• IPv6 for e-Business Project: groundbreaking IPv6 study which mapped, developed business tools, raised awareness and assessed readiness for IPv6 in Australian business.

2007

• Australian IPv6 Summit — IPv6 At Work, Canberra, 19-21 Nov 2007.

2008

• Australian IPv6 Summit — Finding Common Ground, Canberra, 17-19 Nov 2008.
• The VIC6 Testbed Network is built by IPv6Now for the Victorian government, a network for testing IPv6 in action, remotely or locally at VIC6 nodes.

2009

• Australian IPv6 Summit — The Bottom Line, Melbourne, 7-9 Dec 2009.

2010

• Australian IPv6 Summit – IPv6? You're Standing In It! Melbourne 18-20 Oct 2010.

2011

• Australian activities for World IPv6 Day 2011.
• Australian IPv6 Summit — IPv6: Learning From Experience, Melbourne, 17-19 Oct 2011.

2012

• Australian activities for World IPv6 Launch 2012.
